On peut s'interroger si la volonté de représenter un bord de mer ou de cours d'eau occupé par des baigneurs ne marque pas chez les artistes une crainte du grand large voire la grand peur archaïque du déluge.
Ces motifs de plein air marquent néanmoins, par l'harmonie de l'homme avec la nature environnante, l'aube naissante d'une plus grande liberté. C'est particulièrement éclatant chez Thomas Eakins ou Henry Scott Tuke.
